How do you drill hardened steel with the Adiseal 3mm Cobalt Bit?

How to Use the Adiseal Ultimate Metal Drill Bit

1. Mark and Center Punch

Precision is vital when using a 3mm bit. Measure your hole location and use a heavy-duty center punch and hammer to create a deep indentation. This prevents the bit from “walking” (sliding across the surface) and ensures the hole begins exactly where required.

2. Secure the Workpiece for High Torque

Hardened metal can cause the drill bit to “snag” as it breaks through. Secure your metal firmly in a heavy-duty vice or with bolted clamps. If you are using a handheld drill, ensure a firm, two-handed grip to maintain a vertical drilling axis and prevent the workpiece from spinning.

3. Set Your Drill to the Correct RPM

Speed is the primary cause of bit failure. For a 3mm M35 cobalt bit in stainless steel, set your drill to a low speed between 830 – 1650 RPM. High speeds will glaze the metal and burn out the cutting edge of even the best cobalt bits instantly.

4. Apply Heavy, Consistent Feed Pressure

Cobalt bits require significant downward pressure to “bite” into the metal. Apply firm, steady pressure so the bit constantly produces thick metal chips (swarf). If you see fine dust or the bit is merely spinning, you are not applying enough pressure or your speed is too high.

5. Use Cutting Fluid (Recommended but not required)

While the Adiseal Ultimate is designed for high heat resistance, applying a small amount of cutting oil or paste throughout the process will reduce friction. This keeps the M35 HSS-Co structure cool and prevents the bit from welding itself to the workpiece during deep holes.

6. Clear Swarf and Complete the Hole

Periodically retract the bit to clear metal curls from the flutes to prevent clogging. Once the hole is through, allow the bit to air-cool. Do not quench in water, as the thermal shock can cause micro-cracks in the high-strength cobalt structure.

7. Safety

Always wear impact-resistant eye protection. High-performance geometry produces sharp, fast-moving metal swarf. Ensure all loose clothing is tucked in and the drill is in Rotary Mode only.
